How we find and nurture talent at Web Profits


As a fast-growing agency, we’re constantly looking for new talent to join our team. The challenge is the gap in the market. What we’ve found is that there is a huge gap between people who really know what they’re doing (and command salaries so high that it’s usually only the big companies that can afford them, or they start their own shop) and the rest. The problem is “the rest” includes people who have 4-5 years experience, but when you look at what they actually know, it doesn’t reflect at all the amount of time they’ve spent in the industry. My opinion – it’s a challenge with industry standards across the entire country. I personally believe that the standards in Australia are too low across the board, especially when it comes to digital. That’s why I don’t compare myself with any agency in Australia, or even in the US for that matter. What I look at is how the best performing teams in the world work. I’m talking Facebook, Dropbox, Airbnb and the like. They set the bar and they’re awesome. These are high-performance teams that inspire me to be better every single day, and that drive a lot of the innovations here at Web Profits in terms of how we work as a team, and how we deliver our services, especially our Fluid Marketing approach. What we’ve found to be most successful is to find people that have a raw talent, ambition and a hunger to learn, and then to train them up. One of the core approaches we use is ‘paired production’ where team members work together on the same campaign so they can learn from one another, while also increasing the quality of work. Two sets of eyes if you will. We use it when people first start, to get them across the core skills within their area of specialisation and then across all the other different areas. That way, we’ve created a clear and defined professional pathway for turning a junior into a strategist within 2 to 3 years. Which is fast. And intense. But for the right person it works. We also have a library of resources (over half a million dollars worth) on every possible area in digital you can think of – from AdWords, to SEO, CRO, Social, copywriting, you name it. And it’s available to all of our team. We also have processes for a lot of the system-based things we do… and a really supportive team who jump in and help each other whenever they need. We’re pretty much flexible on everything except our standard of excellence. It’s one of the reasons that we can deliver record months, over and over again, for a lot of the clients that we work with. That’s how we do it.
