5 MISTAKES Newbies Make with Facebook Ads – 2019

What’s up you guys Jason Wardrop here in this video I want to break down Five of the biggest mistakes that I see newbies make when it comes to Facebook Advertising now you guys been following my channel here for a while You know, I have a lot of videos on Facebook ads Facebook Ads manager pixel tracking all that good stuff And so I get a lot of comments right and I Hear what people are focusing on I see what people are really wanting to go through and accomplish with their business And so I went through and I made a list of five different things that I’ve seen that people make comments on Where they’re kind of got things a little bit backwards when it comes to Facebook advertising So in order to help you with your business in 2019 moving forward I want to share these five big mistakes with you so you can hopefully avoid them and Get on the right track with your paid advertising because guys let’s face it when you’re putting money into your business You’re investing money into ads and a marketing that those are very valuable dollars. We can’t waste this money So if we have the wrong of wrong objective, then you’re just you’re gonna fail from the start, right? I say it’s a number of times in my channel But stephen r.covey says begin with the end in mind and we could have all the best intentions But if we are making these small mistakes, then we’re really not never gonna get to our goal So let’s dive in I’m gonna cover the five biggest mistakes. I see newbies make when it comes to Facebook advertising All right so the first biggest mistake and I actually saw a comment on this just a couple of days ago and Someone comment on one of my videos saying hey Jason what is the best marketing objective when setting up a Facebook ad campaign to get more likes and Followers on my Instagram account I believe is on the Instagram account might have been Facebook page, but guys, honestly it really applies to any social media network, or if you’re trying to get more YouTube subscribers more Instagram followers more any of this and The truth is guys The money is not in the number of followers that you have then the money is not in the number of subscribers Okay. I know it was several people with well over a hundred thousand well over 500 thousand subscribers that make pennies the dollar compared to some people with much smaller channels and the same thing goes for Instagram if you just have a lot of followers But you don’t have the business sense the business savvy on the backend and know how to actually turn those followers into money Then it really doesn’t matter. If you have five hundred thousand followers or a million followers on Instagram. You still have no business So the key is I would really understand of how to go through and start generating Sales from a small following as opposed to going through and saying well I’m gonna first focus on getting this massive following and then I’m gonna go and make money There’s not a quicker way that you’re gonna go broke then focusing on just likes or followers on whatever social network You’re trying to build believe me guys. I talk with a lot of Instagram influencers and It’s crazy how they have they’ve grown these big followings, but they’re still broke because they don’t know how to monetize it They don’t know how to sell anything to those people. And so this big old following it just it really doesn’t benefit them whatsoever So the first biggest mistake guys is going for likes or followers and having that be your sole focus What I would go for instead is to go and build an email list Because if you’re building an email list Then you’re able to have that way of communication with those people being able to go through an easier sell things to those people and you Can leverage that email list to build your following on YouTube on Instagram on Facebook? Whatever platform you want to go through and grow and that’s exactly what I did guys where I went through and I was only focused On building my email list and then on the back end after somebody already opted into my email list, I would recommend Hey join, my facebook group, which I was able to grow to over 7,000 real estate agents in just a few months And then now more recently I’ve been focused on hey, go subscribe to my youtube channel We’ve got tons of free content over there and I’ve been able to grow that to over 20,000 subscribers in the last 12 months Which obviously I get it. There’s a lot of chance to grew a whole lot faster than I did But you know It’s a good start and honestly if you look at it I’m able to go through and Using the strategy make a lot more money than some of the channels that might be ten times the size of my channel Okay, so enough of that but the second biggest mistake I see newbies with Facebook. Advertising is not focusing on the right Audiences right now Facebook they want to help you out They want to give you all this material to go through and be successful But by giving you all this information all of these different audiences you can go through and target a lot of times That’s what keeps you from actually being successful Now about a year ago Facebook took away the demographic targeting and everyone freaked out and everyone’s like oh man like Facebook ads are done they’re dead and honestly like for me and a lot of my friends that like Spend a lot of money on advertising It really did it faces faze us at all because we’re not going through and targeting any of those demographics and so if you were then you know that like that was like not a good strategy with your business because now you can’t do those targeting and then even with The interests of people interested in basketball or people interested in football or whatever the topic might be Everyone else is going through and clicking those same things of saying hey I want to target people that are interested in real estate or people interested in making money online or whatever it is You’re fighting with so many other Facebook Advertisers and it’s this massive red ocean where you want to create your own blue ocean So what you want to do when it comes to targeting? Specific audiences with your Facebook advertising you want to focus on building your own custom audiences Now what is a custom audience this is anyone that has been a previous client Okay, maybe they bought some product for you or they have used your service or whatever. It might be Anyone that has been a lead So you’ve got maybe their their phone or email address and you’re able to go through and give that to Facebook and say hey Here’s here’s like a list of people that are my potential clients that I want to go through a market – it could be anyone That visits your website anybody has interacted with your Facebook page These are all custom audiences because they’ve already had interaction with your business And so it’s kind of like more of that Retargeting play which is basically advertising like Amazon where you go and check out a product Now all of a sudden you’re seeing this product all over the place, right? So you’re able to do that with your marketing you’re having these custom audiences that you’re showing it to this very targeted Group as opposed to hey, I want to just target everyone that is real estate agent, right? It’s just so broad and you’re really not gonna see that creative results And then what you do is you take this custom audience and then you start and you focus on a 1% look like audience So what the way that works is you go through and say hey Facebook here is the custom audience Here’s like all my leads and I want you to find other people that look just like these leads so they have the same interest maybe the same demographics and even though you can’t target by like Financials and if they’re a homeowner or anything like that Facebook still knows that data. They still have all this data on everyone And so they use this data to go help you create these look like audiences So this is the big key when it comes to targeting is Focusing on your custom audiences and then when it comes time to scale focus on those Look-alike audience because that 1% look like audience that is 2 million people inside that audience which were most business owners That’s we mourned enough people to go through and advertise to and you really don’t need a scale beyond the 1% look like audience until you’re spending more than $2,000 per day on your advertising and so guys a lot of people don’t really ever get to $2,000 per day on your advertisement. Ok, so number 3 guys and I would even say this is not just for newbies This is pretty much intermediate and even some advanced people and this is something that I struggled with for a long time and this is not Having tracking set up. Okay. This is not knowing your numbers So pretty much my whole strategy for the last like two three years was going through and saying, okay I’m gonna put X amount into Facebook ads and as long as I’m making money back out, then I’m good, right? So let’s say I put a thousand bucks into you advertising for the week or whatever it was back in the day and then if I made two thousand or three thousand dollars back out and like Perfect. I made money I’m good And I’m just gonna pocket it and I wasn’t really keeping track of anything the thing about this is it adds a lot of stress Unneeded stress to your life Because you just have no idea where you’re at with your business the same thing goes if you’re like trying to lose weight But you’ve never weighed yourself so you don’t know if like you’re actually losing weight or not. You’re not tracking your calories You’re not like actually taking measurements. You’re not doing any of that stuff. Then you could go three months You could’ve lost ten pounds, but by just looking at yourself in the mirror, you can’t really tell that you lost weight So you got to go through you got a measure You got a track you got to go through on a daily basis track. How much money did you spend? How much money did you make how many leaves did you generate? What’s the lifetime value of those leads and you’ve got to have all this tracking in place? And do it on a day to day basis and guys I started tracking in detail a few months ago and man. It has been like the biggest Revelation of me it’s been so much easier on just my mental state and I’ve been able to be a lot more confident in scaling my ad so scaling my business has been a lot better and it’s just brought me a lot more peace of mind of thinking like oh if I had like maybe a bad webinar one week or Something like that. Hey, don’t worry. It’s all fine. Just look at the numbers. You still made money, right? so that’s a big thing is number three is Tracking go through make sure you’re tracking and don’t just rely on the numbers inside the Facebook as manager But actually make like a Google sheets that you’re tracking. Hey, how many leads were added to my email list? Every single day or every single week depend on how much money you’re spending If you’re not spending a ton of money, you don’t have to do it every single day Just track for the whole week maybe track on Fridays for the previous Friday to that Thursday and what you want to do So you’re not going through and checking your numbers non-stop throughout the day. It’s just wait till that next morning Like let’s say 9:00 a.m. And then go check out Okay How many sales came in through stripe or PayPal or whatever business you’re in or how many leads were added to my business how much? Money was spent on Facebook how much was spent on Google and You’re just going through and tracking all those numbers and so you can have a really good pulse on your business Where at if you can scale when you can scale how much you can scale and all of that alright, so the number four biggest mistake most newbies make when it comes to Facebook advertising is Once a kid, I’m going to quote stephen r.covey and they don’t begin with the end in mind So they go through and they’re like, oh man, I’m gonna get you know likes or leads or whatever it might be But after they generate the lead they have no idea what they’re gonna do with this lead Okay and this is something that I Messed up with about three years ago when I was kind of really diving into all this stuff is I would go through and I’d run ads and then I had some like low ticket offer of like fifty bucks and I didn’t have like that full funnel concept set up and so Like I had that one fifty dollar item and honestly guys if you’re selling just like one fifty dollar item You’re gonna lose money every single time So you need to have that whole funnel laid out of what that looks like, okay Are you gonna be selling them a high ticket item? Are you gonna be staking them through a lot of lower ticket items are you a real estate? Agent and you’re gonna go through and try to book appointments From those leads and then sell them obviously a home which is gonna be somewhat of a high ticket item, right? And make all that money back. So That’s another big mistake I see a lot of Facebook advertising newbies make is they go through and they just throw money at Facebook Ads thinking that they’re gonna Magically make money because all these guys on YouTube are making money with Facebook Ads But if you don’t begin with the end in mind if you don’t understand the funnel if you don’t understand where you’re taking these people And you don’t have that all mapped out You’re once again, you’re gonna lose money every single time with this, right? So the fifth and final principle of what you need to go through and make sure you’re avoiding when it comes to Facebook advertising if you’re a complete newbie or even if you’re kind of like in that intermediate space is Don’t have your Facebook advertising budget, too scattered and What I mean by that is let’s say you’re going through and you’re trying to be the next russell brunson And you’ve got your webinar funneling. You got a book funnel. You got a challenge funnel You’ve got all these different funnels because russell says funnels are great. Which funnels are great I’m not trying to bash Russell or anything like that because he’s a great guy. There’s a lot of great concepts there But as you’re starting out and you don’t have this massive advertising budget You need to focus ninety to ninety five percent of your marketing budget on One single funnel nothing else, okay the only reason why Russell can do that is because he has people full-time to go through and run his Facebook Ads They can focus on all that stuff. They have his massive budget they have this whole team that can go through and create all these different funnels test out different offers and Like it’s just way more than you or me could probably go through and handle right now So if you only have let’s say a hundred dollars a day or a thousand dollars a day or even five thousand dollars a day Focus on one funnel, okay And and most that money can go through cold audiences and then have a little bit of that that budget going towards Retargeting the people that you’ve already interacted with you if you take a look at guys like Sam ovens, for example Sam ovens has been able to grow extremely fast and he has one funnel just one funnel and all of his ads go into this One webinar funnel and he has nothing else k He has one webinar funnel that sells a two thousand dollar ticket item Then he has an upsell to a six thousand dollar ticket item and then he’s got an upsell to his mastermind program. That’s it That’s as simple as his business. He doesn’t have a book funnel He’s that I’m a challenge funnel doesn’t have any of these other funnels It’s literally the one webinar funnel and then once people get through there He has the upsell to the six thousand dollars and then to his $25,000 mastermind or whatever it is. And so that’s it and guys he spends a lot of money every single day I was with him this past summer in New York And he was spending like almost a hundred thousand dollars per day on advertising now. That was Facebook Instagram and Google and all this stuff but guys that much money on just one funnel Okay, so when you’re going through and trying to start all these different funnels and trying to scatter your your focus and all that stuff You’re gonna just fail so quickly So focus on one funnel don’t scatter your advertising budget because you’ve got $20 going here torn Ellen’s going here $20 are gonna hear you’re not gonna get enough information and enough data to know which funnel is actually working Why it’s working why it’s not working and how to actually go through in fixes So pick one funnel, which I’d recommend a webinar funnel But that’s up to you and then go and put a majority of your advertising budget behind that one funnel. Right guys so those are the five key principles of what to avoid when you’re going through and getting start with Facebook Ads and if you guys Like this video go ahead. Give it a thumbs up. 1. awesome tips Jason, but I'm trying to run ads for car dealerships and other local businesses, Should I focus on just lead gen ads and getting customers through the door? Or should I also build their social media and make their websites better? What would you do to get results for car dealers?

  2. I agree with everything you said bro except the first one. It makes no damn sense to spend $10k plus on Facebook ads only to have 200 page likes or followers. I work with a photographer and we spend about $30k a month on ads for his photoshop training and I make sure $1k goes to acquiring likes and followers. He’s grown up to 30k followers on Facebook and Instagram, even when we don’t run ads he still gets sales from his followers and regular posting on his account. So followers and likes and definitely necessary man lol

  3. Great content, but even a 100$ dollars a day is a lot for a person that is starting. Its tu much budged that would be like 2100 a month . Is there something that I don't know about that recommendation? already suscribed!

  4. Hey Jason, I'm an illustrator and just barely starting out with selling a product (vs selling my services). It's been a terrible failure so far. I sell prints (well trying to) and often feel like a bit of an outsider, trying to map these conventional sales models onto that of a dude selling his art lol. Do you have any experience of this kind of business and any similarities/differences to common businesses like real estate/marketing etc. I do suspect that the art audience is a very different mindset than someone wanting to buy, say, a marketing course.

  5. Hey Jason! Let me start off by thanking you for replying to all your comments, Its a real help. I was wondering if you were to recommend something to someone advertising on dropshipping/selling online. what would you recommend?

    Thanks so much,
    Brian

  6. I’m just 13 years old and i wanna start whit facebook ads too grow my smma, do you recommend starting this early?😁

  7. Hey Jason you talked about Building a custom audience. How can i do this if i am brand new to facebook/instagram and want to start my own smma in a very small town in a state/county with only 367000 population ? I was going to run my own ad to create awareness but how would you go about this ???
Great Video again thanks for posting these

  8. Jason Hello from Greece:) I am watching videos of you and have to say that is you are very good at that you do! Have any course about gold traffic tactics that you use on Gold traffic?

  9. Can you run an agency out of your software? For example, if I have 15 real estate agent clients, then Arsenal would let me scale. Or is pricing $300 per real estate agent client?

  10. Hey,

    Super cool Video.

What other types of online business do you do?

Right now i'm looking at other strategies

    Cheers

    Have a great day

  11. Love the info Jason! I am an urban fiction author and your custom audience/look alike audience model is perfect for me. I make a living writing but never have implemented FB ads. I am going to start using your tips and I will let you know how it goes. Keep posting, I'm watching!

  12. Hello Jason. If I have a sport clothes online shop for women in Lithuania (small country). Question : is
    it
appropriate to target audience in sport gyms by filling the gyms addresses on the map all over my country and show ads to them about 6-8 pm when the most of people comes to sport ?

  13. “It doesn’t matter if you have $100 a day, $1,000 a day or $5,000 a day…….”

Looks at his $25 a day ad spend……

Queue: “Hello Darkness my old friend” meme

  14. At the end of the video you said he was spending 100,000 a day on advertising? That's 36M I am not sure about that.

  15. Subscribed!! Thanks for all the great info Jason. I have one question that maybe you have the answer for. I am my FB Business account is in CAD $ but my store sells in USD $. Does FB convert the value of the sale to CAD or is it just pulling in the dollar amount shown? Why I ask this question is it really affects my ROAS. If FB is just pulling the number from my shopify store I need to increase my ROAS by 30% and scale appropriately. Thanks I advance to anyone for your help

  16. Whats up Jason, quick question…if my clients budget is $150 per week, should I just focus on 1 ad and put the entire budget in the 1 ad, or should i do split testing with different ads and like split the budget?? Thanks!!

  17. Hey Jason, thanks for the vid… Quick question, is it true that adding words such as LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT, or TAG in your caption is not allowed now or may lower your reach? Thanks again bro!

  18. Question… I have a campaign that is for 30 days. I noticed the campaign plateaued and I wanted to change it up a bit. I was told it's a bad idea to edit the campaign after it's been live for longer than 24 hours. Is this true? It's best to copy the campaign and do it again? I don't want to lose all my comments and such.

  19. Does anyone know why we are getting this message from our ad campaigns on facebook: "Campaigns turned off because the rule conditions of CC – Issue 4.8.2019 were met."

  20. What type of sales funnel do you think is appropriate for a service based industry. I do branding and graphic design but I'm not sure how to approach it with a funnel strategy.

  21. Hello Jason, Great video. I am just getting started on FB ads. I am taking a successful business from 3rd party sites like AMZN and selling on shopify. I know we have good products since we have incredible feedback and strong sales. Our catalog is large, and all this seems a little overwhelming at the moment. To start I have chosen two popular categories created nice looking ads (using fb instant experience) and I am trying to get content views. In hopes of building up the pixel data and go from there. As I understand it, the budget amount will increase or decrease the amount of time it takes the FB pixel to gather the needed data. In your experience is there a amount of dollars that should be spent to determine if the ad or product is worth advertising? It seems to me based on the sales we currently get if I am failing it is because I am doing something incorrectly and not that the products are not winners. Do you offer consulting or can you point me to someone who does?

  22. if you are just starting out, how many demographics should you target? Is it possible that too many will spoil the results?

  23. hey i'm struggling with my audience i want different people than i'm getting at the moment.
No mater what i target intrest work etc. how much i pay the same time wasters keep coming to my business 🙁

  24. So how do you DO the tracking? Like where on my screen do I click? Lol explain to me like I'm 5 years old. Could you do a video JUST on gauging performance of Facebook ads?

  25. How do I add an Amazon or Itunes button on my Facebook sponsered ad that leads to my product for sale?

  26. It is necessary to build email list for any kind of service you provide? for-instance "Fashion Designer". Do they need an email list? Thanks so much for your tutorials. It is all i have survived on in building my agency. Gd bless you sir.

  27. Hi Jason,
For something like realestate seller leads, would you recommend using facebook lead form or a landing page?

  28. the first one hurt me so bad. my followers dont engage or do anything. Likes that actually have interest in your page or service is the best

  29. 3 minutes into the video and you still haven't shared anything of value! This video is about Facebook not Instagram! you are confusing your audience and turning them away.

  30. Hello Jason great video, just maybe correct on 0:14 "Facebook Ass" lol ! take care and keep up the good work !

  31. Hello Jason, great video. I have a question though: If I want to give my audience to opt out of my seeing my ads on their feed, is there an option for that? Asking this as Facebook does take negative comments into account health.

  32. Started fbook ads 2 weeks ago. Good so far. We have an ad where people can click on the image or the Learn More link at the bottom and that will take them to our website where they can RSVP our seminars , which is what we want them to do. My only concern is that at the top of this ad, there is a link that states Like this Page. I believe this only means like this ad not like our fbook page. I learned that for people to receive our notifications they must like our fbook PAGE … not just the ad? Thoughts?

  34. MISTAKES
    (1) 1:28 Focusing on 'Likes' or Followers.
    (2) 4:23 Focusing on the Wrong Audiences
    (3) 7:48 Not Tracking your Numbers
    (4) 10:40 No Business System in Place
    (5) 12:12 Don't Scatter your Budget

  35. I have run a facebook ad for some time now and each time I did that, I get just a single sale while my record shows that my ad reached thousands of people on FB. What do I do to my FB ad to generate constant sales, please?

  36. Hi Jason thank you so much for this video such value 😍
But regards to tracking audience and having pixel
Can i install same 1 pixel to a website and separate landing page provider?

  37. Thank you! This was great information. I sometimes get 'shiny facebook ads' syndrome. Thanks for reminding me to just focus on one funnel. Thumbs up!!!

  38. HI Jason, thanks for your video. I got a question here. May i know which campaign is better when running ecommerce business? should be traffic?

  39. I'm frustrated and lost. I've been at this for a year and I still have no idea if I have an audience or how to proceed. Nothing seems to help. I need a mentor because it only gets more confusing the more I try to learn

  40. Thanks Jason
I have a lot to learn about setting up ads and creating the right funnel. What video do you recommend for developing the funnel before setting up the ad.
I have a book and some products to sell. I am working up to doing a webinar but am not there yet. I do have a YT Channel, not sure which videos to increase traffic to.

  41. Jason, I have seen a good bit of your videos. My issue is I am working with a client and using my business account and have admin access to theirs. Built an ad for them but I am not sure where to get the pixel code so I can ad to the backend of their website which I have built already.

  42. Great video! Thank you for the insight. I am doing social media for a small winery that does wine tastings and sells wine on premises (not online). Do you have any ideas about the best campaign/ funnel is for this market? Thank you in advance!
